What are some must-have features for a winter coat/jacket?

Winter in the UK is no joke; not all coats are equal. I know this is the time of year when I'm most likely to get wet and cold (and sometimes sick), so I want my coat to be waterproof, warm and well-designed. That way, it'll keep me dry and cozy all winter, no matter what Mother Nature throws at me!

What are some must-have features for a winter coat/jacket?

Water-resistant

If you want to wear your coat in heavy rain without getting soaked, you'll need a waterproof one. Waterproof coats are heavier and more expensive than non-waterproof ones, but they can protect against even the heaviest downpour! While water-resistant is not the same as waterproof, it's important to note that water-resistant means your coat will keep you dry in light rain.

Thinsulate lining or down insulation

Thinsulate lining or down insulation are must-have features for a winter coat/jacket. Thinsulate is a synthetic insulation that provides warmth without bulk, making it lightweight and breathable. It doesn't absorb moisture like down does, so you won't be left with damp clothing if caught in the rain or snow.

Thinsulate insulation is made of polyester fibers coated with a thin layer of polyethylene (a plastic material). This results in an effective insulator that retains its loft even when wet (unlike down).

Cuffs or cables at the wrist to keep out wind and snow

Cuffs or cables at the wrist are necessary to keep out wind and snow. If you want a more minimalist look, try cuffs that snap on with buttons or velcro. If you want something more traditional, check out the cuffs attached to zippers. The best part? They can be made from any material leather, wool, fleece--and come in various colors (black is always classic).

Pockets in the right places (inside to keep the heat in)

  • Pockets. A good winter coat should have a place to keep your hands warm or at least dry. You want to avoid digging around in your bag for gloves when it's freezing outside and you're late for class!
  • Handwarmer pockets are my favorite because they keep both hands warm while allowing access from either side of the garment (if you're right-handed). This way, I can use my right hand without removing my left glove or vice versa.

A hood that stays on your head when it's windy or snowing.

  • The hood should fit snugly around the face and have a drawstring or other way to tighten it. You want it to be comfortable but tight enough so no snowflakes can get in.
  • You should be able to see through the hood--a big problem with some winter coats is that they're too thick for you to see what's happening around you! This is especially important if kids play outside; if they fall, having a clear view of them will help ensure their safety while getting up again (and maybe even help them avoid tripping over something).
  • Another important feature: is adjustability! Ideally, there would be an adjustable band at the base of each side seam to keep the wind from blowing up under your coat and into your shirt/sweater underneath; this keeps warmth trapped around your torso instead of escaping down into lower body regions where we all know heat escapes quickly anyway (hello, armpits).

A winter coat should be waterproof, warm, and well-designed.

When shopping for a winter coat, it's important to remember that there are many different types of coats on the market. Some are designed for warmth, and others are geared toward keeping you dry in the rain. You'll want a coat that can do both--and preferably look good!

  • Waterproof and breathable: If your coat isn't waterproof, it will probably get wet very quickly when exposed to moisture from rain or snow (or even just sweat). This can lead to uncomfortable coldness and mildew damage if left damp for long periods. A good winter jacket should be able to repel water while still allowing air circulation through its material; this helps keep you warm even when wet!

Mens Sheepskin Coat

Mens Sheepskin Coat

A men's sheepskin coat is a stylish and practical piece of outerwear made from sheep's skin. This coat is typically lined with soft and cozy sheepskin wool, providing warmth and insulation against cold weather. The coat's exterior can be made from various materials, such as leather, suede, or wool, and may feature additional detailing like pockets, buttons, or fur trim. A men's sheepskin coat can be a versatile addition to any wardrobe, suitable for casual and formal occasions. With proper care, this durable and timeless coat can last many years and become a beloved staple in any man's wardrobe.

Conclusion

A good winter coat keeps you warm, dry, and great-looking. It's important to find a coat that fits well and is comfortable. You should also consider the above features when shopping for your next coat or jacket!
